Dr. Josh Wymer is an accomplished nurse, team-oriented clinical operations leader, and forward-looking health information executive with more than 25 years in healthcare. Residing in Saint Louis, Missouri, his present roles include Founding Chief Clinical Officer for Shifthive, Inc., and Chief Product Officer for Medical Match, Inc., separate organizations delivering innovative solutions in the healthcare workforce management space. Josh also serves in various advisory roles for other startups and accelerators while teaching advanced informatics, executive nurse leadership, and evidence-based practice.
With an undergraduate degree in nursing from Seattle University, Josh completed a Master of Science in Nursing in Health Care Informatics with the University of San Diego, a Master of Science in Project Management from Granite State College, a Master of Arts in Enterprise Strategic Planning from the U.S. Naval War College, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice in Executive Leadership from Johns Hopkins University. Josh’s doctoral work at Hopkins explored the impact of certification in the context of early career clinicians and their practice setting. His work also included contributions in health information systems, cybersecurity, and new product development.
Josh recently completed a successful 20+ year career in the U.S. Navy that included three combat zone deployments and direct support to multinational forces and special operations missions. Josh’s military awards and decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards), as well as other meritorious awards and citations. He was recognized with the prestigious Fed100 Award in 2022, alongside a U.S. Senator and the Secretary of Transportation, for several of his individual leadership achievements while in the dual-hatted roles of Chief Health Information Officer for the Defense Health Agency’s San Diego Market, a comprehensive health system serving 367,000 eligible beneficiaries, and as Chief Nursing Informatics Officer for a large academic medical center with 10 regional health clinics.
Josh is a proud member of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives and holds the healthcare chief information officer (CHCIO) and digital health executive (CDH-E) credentials. His additional credentials include perioperative nursing (CNOR), nursing informatics (RN-BC), and as an advanced nurse executive (NEA-BC). As a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE), he previously served on the Editorial Board for Healthcare Executive magazine and mentors early career healthcare executives. As a Fellow with the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN), Josh is a recognized advocate for digital health transformation, human-centered design, and peer-collaboration across interprofessional teams. His recently peer-reviewed work has focused on executive leadership, interprofessional teams, and empowering clinicians.
An active volunteer at the local and national level, Josh currently serves as Vice President, Board of Directors, Competency & Credentialing Institute, Denver, CO, representing more than 42,000 perioperative nurses and surgical services professionals. He also serves on the advisory board for the Association for Executives in Healthcare Applications, Data, and Analytics and on the North American Advisory Panel for Analytics with the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.
