Bonnie Barnes

FAAN, Co-Founder & CEO The DAISY Foundation

Season 01 - Episode 02

In one of my many roles I have held over the years, one of probably the most rewarding one has been being the DAISY coordinator at a medical center in one of my former lives. what made the experience especially rewarding, besides Cinnabon and coordinating the celebratory events, was having the privilege of reading about the incredible work of our nurses in the nominations. I am so very pleased and filled with gratitude for having the ability to share this time with Bonnie Barnes and you.

Bonnie and Mark Barnes FAAN

Bonnie and Mark Barnes spent their careers working as advertising and marketing executives. They were retired, growing wine grapes in Sonoma, CA, and enjoying life in 1999 when Mark's son Patrick, age 33, developed the auto-immune disease, Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP). Pat and his wife had given birth to the family's first grandchild 6 weeks prior to Pat's illness, so they flew to be with him and his wife. Pat's death was a terrible surprise to his family. However, the nursing care they experienced during Pat's 8-week hospitalization compelled them to express their gratitude to nurses everywhere for the clinical skill and especially compassionate care nurses provide every day. This is why The Barnes's created The DAISY Foundation (an acronym for diseases attacking the immune system) and The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
