Dr. Montalvo is an innovative nurse leader and Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing with an established track record leading national initiatives to advance solutions aimed at decreasing disparity, nursing scholarship, and translating research into practice. She has worked with federally qualified health centers, trade associations, federal agencies, academia, and philanthropy, allowing her to maintain a broader inclusive world view. At the federal level, her work was recognized by two Surgeon Generals, one for childhood asthma and second for childhood obesity. The HRSA Bureau of Primary Healthcare recognized her work during the National Health Disparities Collaborative with a Leadership Award. Dr. Montalvo is a graduate of Columbia University School of Nursing and serves on the Alumni Council. She is an alumna of the RWJF Executive Nurse Fellowship, and serves as their NurseTRUST Board as a Director-At-Large. In 2019, she was recognized as Nurse of the Year by the National Hispanic Nurses Association, New York Chapter. Most recently, she is working as a Co-creator and organizer of Nursing Mutual Aid which aims to foster global connections to help amplify the knowledge of frontline nurses, nurse scholars and students often marginalized within nursing. Dr. Montalvo has several peer-reviewed publications and her research has focused on leadership, political skill and mentoring of doctoral nurses. As a Latina, she understands the lived-experience of adversity and bias, the value of mentorship and working with authentic leaders.
